# Mentor or tutor someone remotely: code, software and websites

> Help someone who is stuck in their code, an AI tool, a piece of software or a website, without taking over their learning. A practical guide to remote mentoring on a Mac.

Watch the 30-second demo: [How to mentor a student remotely without taking over](https://youtu.be/EnAVxuIP_8A).

**Short answer:** let the student share their screen and keep their hands on the keyboard, while you read along, ask questions and point with the pen. Take over only to show something once. With Pairio, both of you can type on the same screen and code stays sharp enough to read, which matters when you are reviewing someone else's work line by line. The same goes for learning a piece of software or a website: the learner does the clicking, you point.

## Why mentoring on a normal video call is hard

Students get stuck in small places: a missing bracket, a wrong path, an error message they do not understand, or an AI assistant that sent them in circles. On a normal video call, the code is a blur, you cannot point, and you end up dictating fixes. The student leaves with working code and no idea why it works.

Good mentoring is the opposite: the student does the work, the mentor asks the right question at the right moment.

## How to do it with Pairio

1. **Install Pairio** on your Mac. The student installs it too, or joins from their browser with a link.
2. **The student calls you** when they are stuck, with one click. No need to plan a meeting.
3. **The student shares their screen** and explains what they expected and what happened.
4. **You read along** and ask questions first: "What does this line return?"
5. **Point instead of fixing.** Circle the suspicious line with the pen and let them find it.
6. **Take over only to demonstrate**, for example how to use the debugger, and then give the controls back.
7. **End with a recap** in their own words, and let them write it down.

## Mentoring when AI tools are involved

Many students now code with ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor next to them. That is fine, and also a reason to sit next to them now and then:

- Read the AI's answer together and ask: "Do you understand every line?"
- Let the student write the next prompt, and discuss it before they send it.
- Review the diff together before they accept changes.

We call this pair prompting. It turns the AI from a shortcut into a teacher. More on that in [Build with AI together](/blog/build-with-ai-together).

## Mentoring in software and websites, not only code

People also get stuck in tools: a spreadsheet formula, a design app, a booking system, a website they have to use for work. The recipe is the same. The learner shares their screen and does the clicking, you ask questions and circle the spot, and you take over only to show something once. Because Pairio shares the whole screen, it works with any software or website.

## Why Pairio fits mentoring

- **Free for most students and mentors**: everyone gets 10 hours per month, with every feature.
- **Readable code**, also in a terminal or a small editor font.
- **Both can type**, so you can show something without grabbing the laptop.
- **Low barrier to ask**: one click to call makes it easier for a student to ask for help early, instead of after hours of frustration.

## When Pairio is not the right choice

- The student uses Windows, Linux or a Chromebook and you want to take over their screen. They can join from their browser and share their screen, so you see it and can draw on it, but taking over needs the Mac app on their side.
- You teach a whole class. Pairio supports up to 4 people per call.
- You need to record lessons. Pairio does not record calls.

## Questions people ask

**Is it free for students?** Every user gets 10 hours per month for free, with all features. For most mentoring that is enough.

**Does it work with bootcamps and online courses?** Yes. Pairio shares the whole screen, so it works with any editor, browser or course platform.

**Can parents use it to help their kids with schoolwork on the computer?** Yes. With a Mac on both sides you can see, point and take over. If one side joins from a browser, you can still see and point.
